Software for private dietitians

Journify runs your diary, clinical notes, invoices and client portal, with online booking and reminders by email and text. The dietetics pack adds ABCDE assessment templates, weight trends and a food diary clients fill in through the portal, with photos.

Dietitian is a protected title and dietitians must be registered with the HCPC (many also belong to the BDA). Nutritionist isn't protected: registered nutritionists are on the Association for Nutrition's UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists, and nutritional therapists register with bodies such as BANT or CNHC.

The dedicated dietetics pack follows within six months of launch, and until then you'll start on the General pack (diary, notes, invoices, outcome measures, goals, handouts and packages) and move across to your own pack when it ships.

What it does for dietitians and nutritionists

When clients don't turn up

The BDA's advice for dietitians going freelance asks a blunt question: what will you do if a client doesn't pay, or doesn't turn up? Journify sends reminders by email and text, asks clients to agree your cancellation terms before the first appointment, and lets you sell a three-session low-FODMAP programme as one package.

  • Appointment reminders by email and text
  • Terms of business agreed in the portal
  • Packages count sessions used and left

Doing the admin yourself

Going private usually means losing the admin support you had as an employee. Clients can book online, fill in their intake form before they arrive and pay their invoice online. After the session, the AI scribe drafts your note for you to check, and GP letters start from a template.

  • Online booking and intake forms
  • AI scribe drafts notes for your review
  • GP and referral letter templates

Support between appointments

The BDA points out that people on weight-loss medication often eat much less and can fall short on protein, fibre and fluids, so a lot of the work happens between sessions. You can set goals and send handouts from day one. The dietetics pack adds a food and symptom diary with photos, weight and BMI trend graphs, and a meal plan builder.

Who pays, and how it's billed

Most clients pay for themselves, alongside some insured, case-managed, care home and corporate work. Treatment by an HCPC-registered dietitian is VAT exempt, a nutritionist's treatment is standard-rated only if they're VAT-registered, and supplements or test kits sold separately are standard-rated.

Questions from dietitians and nutritionists

Can I sign up before the dietetics pack is ready?

Yes. You'll start on the General pack, which covers the diary, notes, invoices, portal, goals and handouts. When the dietetics pack ships, within six months of launch, it installs into your practice and doesn't change the records or templates you've already got.

I'm a registered nutritionist, not a dietitian. Does that change anything?

It changes the VAT and a few templates. The nutritionist setup records your AfN, BANT or CNHC registration, starts you as not VAT-registered, and treats your sessions as standard-rated if you are. The eating disorder and enteral feeding templates are hidden.

Will it plot growth centiles for children?

Not on day one, and we'd rather say so now. The pack plots weight, BMI and waist trends. Centile plotting on UK-WHO and UK90 charts only switches on once we've confirmed the reuse terms for the RCPCH reference data.

I still work in the NHS. Can I keep my private clients separate?

Yes. The BDA is clear that private work shouldn't touch NHS computers, email or clinic space, and Journify is your own system with its own login. All client data is kept in the UK.
